He is M.A (1992) in Political Science from Guwahati University. He completed his Masters in Law from Guwahati University in 2002. In 2006 he got his PhD from Guwahati University.

Dr Amiya Kumar Bhuyan is the former general secretary of AASU. He was a Congress party member till 2005. In 2005 he joined BJP. The gross total value of his moveable assets is Rs. 24,39,022.61. He has no criminal record.
