New Delhi, Sept 12: Accusing Assam Public Works (APW) president Abhijit Sharma of contempt of court over NRC issue, the Supreme Court on Tuesday gave him a 4-week deadline to submit an explanation. The apex court on Tuesday rapped Sharma for “disclosing information” regarding NRC update process during a recently held press conference. In his reaction, Sharma said: “I have not disclosed anything. I have only highlighted corruption in the ongoing NRC update process. Within next four weeks, I will submit all documents in the Hon’ble Court.’ The All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) has hailed the order of the Supreme Court. Referring to the Abhijit Sharma issue, AAMSU president Azizur Rahman said that such direction from the apex court would definitely send a strong message to the people concerned who used to interfere in the court’s functioning.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has asked the Centre to form a new committee to look into the sealing of Indo-Bangla border, after former Home Secretary GK Pillai turned down the offer to head the proposed committee.
The apex court had earlier set up a 3-member committee comprising Pillai, Former BSF DG DK Pathak and retired professor of Gauhati University Abdul Mannan. The court will again take up the matter on Thursday.
