Flood situation improves in Cachar

 From our Correspondent

Silchar, Aug 12: Though the current flood situation is normal in the district of Cachar, all the line departments have been asked to prepare and keep constant vigil on the situation. As per reports received from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and India Meteorological Department (IMD), there are chances of heavy rainfall in the coming 4 to 5 days. However, at present there is no flood like emergency. River Barak is rising at the rate of 2 cm per hour and at present is below danger level. Other tributaries are also rising at the rate of 1 cm per hour. District administration of Cachar is also monitoring the situation and is also ready to face any sort of emergency.
Assam Rifles, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been alerted. This information has been shared last evening at a press-release by the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar and District Disaster Management Authority. The State Bank of India (SBI) handed over a cheque as a part of their CSR activity. This was sought from them as a part of the project My City, My Responsibility’. There are 3 NGOs in Silchar under this project, Shefali Enterprise, Neogenesis and Society for Pathology. In this regard, a help was sought from the SBI, Silchar, for smooth functioning of the project by engaging ‘containerized tricycles’ for Swachh Silchar initiative.
On the same day, the Regional Manager on behalf of the bank sanctioned an amount of Rs.15, 18,000 through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity. District administration has already proposed and urged upon the Director of the National Institute of Silchar (NITS) for making of these tricycles by seeking assistance from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The NITS has also been kind enough to provide the design and estimate for making these tricycles. Within a month, 40 tricycles will be operating for collection of Municipal Solid Waste in Silchar Municipal area.
It has been informed that an awareness programme by NDRF team on Disaster Management including demonstration of search and rescue technique will be held at Katigorah sub division office, Katigorah, NG HS School, Sonai, DNHS School, Udharbond on 15 and 16 August respectively. Gaon Panchayat Level Emergency Programme Exercise (GP-EMEx) will be held on August 22, most tentatively in the entire 5 Revenue Circles of Cachar district. This will be a disaster preparedness programme at village level under joint initiative of SDRF and NDRF.
