KOKRAJHAR, Aug 12: The designated field of Kokrajhar which is used as parade ground during the celebration of Independence Day or Republic Day, has been under knee-deep water since Friday due to incessant rain that has submerged many areas in the district. Most of the wards under Kokrajhar Municipal Board (KMB) are affected and inundated by flood waters and six major rivers in the district are flowing above danger level as rain has been continuing since August 8.
The designated field of Kokrajhar, where the national tricolour is to be hoisted by the chief guest of the Independence Day celebration, is still under water and the district administration is likely to choose an alternative parade ground if situation does not improve by Sunday.
Meanwhile, as per the reports of the district, the total number of villages affected in the district is 233, which include Bagribari Revenue Circle- 55 villages, Gossaigaon Revenue Circle- 35 villages and
Bhawraguri Revenue Circle-38 villages. The total crop areas affected is 17,348 hectare, that includes Kokrajhar-2991 hec, Dotma-4209 hec, Bogribari-2884 hec, Gossaigaon-3676 hec and Bharaguri- 3588 hec. The total population affected is 1,09,829 in which Kokrajhar has 20,722, Dotma- 9,000, Bogribari-71,868 and Bhawraguri-8,239. Total relief camps opened till today is 32 with 18 in Kokrajhar, three in Bogribari and 11 in Bhawraguri. The total inmates in R/C are 33,506 of which Kokrajhar has 23,601, Bhawraguri has 8,239 and Bogribari has 1,666. Total animals affected include big animals- 36,056, small animals-24,014, poultry- 46,540 and total roads damaged is 10, including two bridges and embankment.
