Red Sander logs seized

Shillong, Sept 13: Acting on a specific intelligence, a joint team of Customs from preventive units in Shillong and Silchar, assisted by personnel of 53 Battalion of Border Security Force, Machimpur Company, seized 110 logs of Red Sander (Pterocarpus santalinus) weighing 2,409 kg from a place near the Silchar-Mizoram national Highway on  Tuesday. Shillong-based Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Hqrs) IR Kharkongor said the seized logs have been valued at Rs. 60.22 Lakh. A case under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962 has been registered. Initial investigation indicates that the consignment was transported from south India and was meant for smuggling to Myanmar. Red Sander has been  declared as an endangered species  under the International Union for Conservation of Nature and also listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
