Assam thrash Himachal, enter final round of Santosh Trophy Football

GUWAHATI: Assam thrashed Himachal Pradesh 7-0 and stormed into the final phase of the Santosh Trophy Football at Kokrajhar today. In the group ‘D’ encounter hosts were leading by 5-0 in the lemon break.

Assam today needed just a point to book their berth in the final round. However the team played good soccer throughout the match and collected three points to finish top of the points table.

The match was only 3 minutes old when Milan Basumatary put Assam ahead. Milan also scored the third goal of the team in the 13th minute. Like Milan, Arjun Mardi also scored twice in the game- 37 minute and 76 minute respectively. Joydeep Gogoi (12), Dipu Mirdha (34) and Nabin Rabha (61) were the other scorers.

With this victory Assam finished the group stage collecting 15 points from five games. Railways came second in the group with 12 points from their five outings.

Meanwhile Itanagar will host the final phase of the competition and it will be held in the last part of November. Six group toppers will be joined by three second best teams from the group stage. The other three teams will be host Arunachal Pradesh, last season winner Karnataka and runners up Meghalaya.
