Early Life

Debabrata Saikia is a resident of Nazira town in Sivasagar district of Assam. He is Indian National Congress politician from Assam. He is the son of Former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia. His age is about 56 years. He is married to Bandana Saikia. The couple is blessed with two children named Luit and Krihnika.

Education

Veteran politician, Saikia completed his graduation in Arts from Calcutta University.

Career and Politics

Debabrata Saikia was the Leader of Opposition in the 14th Assam Legislative Assembly.

  1. From 1992-1993, he served as the General Secretary of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Committee.
  2. From 1993-96, he was the vice president of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.

Debabrata Saikia contested from the Nazira constituency for the first time in 2011 and won against Drupad Borgohain from Communist Party of India (CPI).

He won the Nazira seat again in the Assam Election 2016 by defeating Prohlad Gowala from BJP party.

He is the sitting MLA of Nazira constituency, a seat that his father (Late Hiteswar Saikia won 6 times and mother Hemoprabha Saikia won 2 times. Of the 15 Assam Assembly elections, Congress has won the Nazira seat 13 times. AGP (Tanu Konwar) won the seat in 1988 and CPI (Drupad Borgohain) won it in 2006.
