Ram Prasad Sarma is a former BJP politician from Assam. He was born on February 14, 1955 in Behali under Sonitpur district. His father's name is Harinarayan Sarma and his mother's name is Mukund Kumari. He got married in the year 1984 with Ganga Sarma. He is blessed with one daughter, Pallavi Sharma.
An Arts graduate from Medipathar College, Sarma is also a Bachelors in Law from Tura Law College. He is also a senior advocate in Gauhati High Court.
A former BJP politician, Ram Prasad Sarma is a former Lok Sabha MP from Tezpur. Sarma was the president of Assam Gorkha Sammelan. He was the member of consultative committee under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. He was also the member of Standing Committee on Water Resources and a Committee on Subordinate Legislation in the year 2014. In the same year, he was also elected to 16th Lok Sabha in the General Election 2014 as a candidate of BJP from the Tezpur Parliamentary seat. In the year 2016, he was the member of Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice.
In the year 2019, he crossed over from BJP to Congress. A BJP member for 29 years, he left the saffron party in 2019 to join the Congress alleging negligence. He is part of the Gorkha community. He would be contesting the Assam Assembly elections 2021 from the Barchalla No 72 Assembly constituency in a Congress ticket.
His candidature was under threat after his daughter got arrested when she was said to be connected to the APSC jobs scam.
