Early Life

Ripun Bora was born on 1 October 1955 to late Shri Dambarudhar Bora and late Shrimati Hameswari Bora, in Gohpur in the Sonitpur district of Assam. Fought Assam Elections three times – 1996, 2001, 2006. Fighting Assam Elections for the fourth time

Education

Ripun Bora completed his Masters in Economics from Guwahati University in 1978 and studied LL.B from Guwahati University in 1983. 

Career & Political Life

Bora was a Lecturer at Chaiduar College, Gohpur from 1979 to 1985. Bora held the position of Magistrate as an Assam Civil Service Officer, and was an Officer on Special Duty in Delhi. Bora was awarded by the President of India in 1992 for best performance in conducting the Census as an officer of the Assam Civil Service. Ripun Bora also practiced law and was an advocate at the Gauhati High Court from 1996-2001.

Ripun Bora contested in a Congress ticket for the first time from the Gohpur constituency in 1996 and lost to Ganesh Kutum of AGP. Bora contested again from the Gohpur Constituency and won in the 2001 and 2006 Assembly Polls by a total of 58,850 votes and 69,718 votes respectively. Bora has been instrumental in conducting mass rallies ahead of the Assam Legislative Elections 2021. Ripun Bora is President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Member of Rajya Sabha.

Controversies of Ripun Bora

In September 2020, Ripun Bora along with seven other Rajya Sabha members, was suspended from the House for their unruly behaviour in the House. They tore documents, broke mics and heckled the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. The un-Parliamentary behaviour was to protest the farm laws introduced in the Parliament which were later passed.

In 2008, the CBI arrested Ripun Bora in New Delhi for allegedly attempting to bribe a CBI official in a case involving the murder of Daniel Topno, an Adivasi leader from Assam.
