Early Life:

Rupjyoti Kurmi was born on 27th July 1977 in Dibrugarh. He is 43 years old. His father's name is Late Cheniram Kurmi and his mother's name is Late Rupam Kurmi who was former Cabinet minister of Assam. His permanent address is Kathalguri, Shantipur in Jorhat district of Assam. He got married on 22nd July 2006 to his Smti. Manchuria Bordoloi and is blessed with one son.He loves to listen to music.

Education:

He is Higher Secondary (Class XII) pass from J.B College, Jorhat.

Career & Political Life:

He is the director of Blood Doner's club of Mariani, President of Mariani ECO club, Adviser of an NGO - Mariani Friends, President of Assam Throwball Association, President of Mariani Sports Association, Adviser of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha of Jorhat Branch.

In the 2016 Legislative Assembly elections, Rupjyoti Kurmi of INC won with 36701 votes. In 2011, he won with 35754 votes contesting in a Congress (INC) ticket. In the 2006 Legislative Assembly elections, he won with 33471 votes on a Congress (INC) ticket. His mother Rupam Kurmi too had won from the Mariani seat thrice – 1991, 1996, 2001.

The Mariani seat has been a Congress (INC) stronghold since the Assembly elections of 1967. It is only in 1985 that Naren Tanti won as an Independent from the seat and Alok Kumar Ghosh of Trinamool Congress (TMC) won by by-polls of 2004.

Fought Assam Elections Thrice – 2006, 2011 and 2016. Fighting Assam Elections for the Fourth Time. 

Controversies:

In 2020, Rupjyoti Kurmi was suspended by Hitendra Nath Goswami, Assam Assembly Speaker, for a day for raising the matter of land encroachment by Nagaland prior to the Question Hour. The suspension was lifted following a request made by Leader of Oppostion in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia.

This year (2021), corruption charges were filed against him after the Vigilance department launched a probe into the alleged improper use of MLA funds.
