Sarbananda Sonowal is the son of Jibeswar Sonowal and Dineswari Sonowal. He is known to a dynamic leader and an energetic person who cares for the well-being of the people. He completed his BA in English from Hanumanbaksh College under Dibrugarh University and LLB from Gauhati University.
Sonowal is the Chief Minister of Assam. Sarbananda Sonowal has been a student leader and from 1992 to 1999 was the President of All Assam Student Union (AASU).
He served as the Union Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs in the Narendra Modi-Cabinet during Modi's first term as the Prime Minister. He was also the president of Assam BJP. Sonowal was elected as the Chief Minister of Assam in 2016 from Majuli. He would be contesting the 2021 state elections from the same constituency.
Besides the several welfare schemes and infrastructure development done during his tenure as the Chief Minister, it is during Sarbananda Sonowal's tenure, the Guwahati International Film festival started. He understands the importance of youth in sports and culture. He has been playing an active role in mobilising the youth of the state into sports and cultural activities. During his college times, he won the Mr Strong title.
His total assets are estimated at Rs 3.17 crore, an increase of Rs 1.32 crore between 2016 and 2021, as mentioned in his election affidavit.
