Amguri Assembly Constituency is located in Upper Assam in the district of Sivasagar. It falls under Jorhat Lok Sabha Assembly. The town of Amguri, which also functions as a municipal area committee, is located near the Nagaland border. It is connected to neighbouring towns by National Highway-2.


Assembly constituency name and number:

Amguri Assembly Constituency is one of the 126 assembly constituencies of the Assam Legislative Assembly and falls under Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency. It bears the assembly constituency number 103.

Parliamentary constituency:

Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency is spread over Jorhat and Sivasagar districts of Assam. According to the 2011 census, it has a total population of 1922470, of which 84.08% is its rural population and 15.92% is its urban population. The current Member of Parliament representing Jorhat Lok Sabha Constituency is Topon Kumar Gogoi of Bharatiya Janata Party.

District:

Sivasagar is a district in Upper Assam which has its headquarters located in the city of Sivasagar. It comprises two sub-divisions: Sivasagar and Nazira. The district is bordered by Naga Hills in the south, Arunachal Pradesh in the south-east, and the Brahmaputra river towards the north. 

Number of towns:

The only town under Amguri Assembly Constituency is Amguri town with a population of 8,002. The town also functions as a municipal area committee. 

Number of inhabited villages:

There are about 109 villages under Amguri Assembly Constituency. Some of the major villages are Haluadang Grant, Haluating Grant and Hatimuria Gharphalia. 

Assembly Status:

The current MLA of Amguri Assembly Constituency is Prodip Hazarika of Asom Gana Parishad. There is no reservation for minority candidates in the constituency.

The total population of the Amguri Assembly Constituency is 160053, of which 95% is its rural population, and its urban population is 5%.

There are about 31,418 households in the Amguri Assembly Constituency.

Water connection:

Amguri Assembly Constituency has water facilities of Over Hand Tank (OHT) and tap water from a treated source. The people of Amguri also have facilities for tube well boreholes. There is also an availability of fire-fighting services in a few towns.

In the 1996 Assam Assembly Election, Pradip Hazarika of Asom Gana Parishad won with 42.26% of the overall votes.

In the 2001 Assam Assembly Election, Anjan Dutta of the Indian National Congress won with 55.5% of the overall votes.

In the 2006 Assam Assembly Election, Prodip Hazarika of Asom Gana Parishad won with 44497 votes.

In the 2011 Assam Assembly Election, Anjan Dutta of the Indian National Congress won with 47.54% of the overall votes.

In the 2016 Assam Assembly Election, Prodip Hazarika of Asom Gana Parishad won again with 43.75% of the overall votes.

Percentage vote share of the political parties in the previous election:

In the 2016 Assam Assembly Election, Prodip Hazarika of the Asom Gana Parishad emerged as the winner with 43.75% of the total votes. Angkita Dutta of the Indian National Congress was the runner up with 42.07% of the total votes. Gayatri Borah of All India United Democratic Front secured 0.91% of the total votes. Rajkumar Dowarah All India Forward Bloc secured 0.73% of the total votes. Independent candidates Dulal Baruah, Janardan Hazarika, Dilram Karmakar, and Anwar Hussain secured 5.73%, 3.56%, 1.1% and 0.7% of the total votes, respectively. 0.7% of the total votes were given to "None of the above".

The candidates who contested the 2016 Assam Assembly Election are Prodip Hazarika of Indian Asom Gana Parishad, Angkita Dutta of Indian National Congress, Gayatri Borah of All India United Democratic Front, Rajkumar Dowarah of All India Forward Bloc and independent candidates Dulal Baruah, Janardan Hazarika, Dilram Karmakar and Anwar Hussain. In the end, Prodip Hazarika of Asom Gana Parishad emerged as the winner with 43.75% of the total votes. 

Work done in previous five years:

In the last five years, Prodip Hazarika laid foundation stones for namghars under Assam darshan Scheme. He also built playgrounds in rural areas, distributed land pattas and allocation letters to landless indigenous landless families and constructed roads at several parts of his constituency.
