Kalaigaon, located in the district Udalguri, Assam, is a town and Legislative Assembly Constituency. It falls under the Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituency. The total population of the Kalaigaon subdivision, according to the 2011 census record, was 110862, and from this population, 56285 were males, and the no. of females were 54577.

The people of some of the villages of Kalaigaon that fall in Darrang district was 24246. And the population of the remaining villages that fall in the Udalguri district are 85616. The official language of this town is Assamese. Agriculture was the main source of income of this place, especially the cultivation of rice. A few tea gardens are also there in the town.

The Legislative Assembly contains 126 members of the Legislative Assembly directly elected from single-seat constituencies and holds office for five years. The name of the constituency is the Kalaigaon assembly constituency. It is one of 126 assembly constituency and bears constituency no. 65. It is also a part of Mangaldoi Lok Sabha Constituency.

The no. of a parliamentary constituency in India is 542, and out of this, the seats for the general category are 442. Schedule Cast (SC) seats and Schedule Tribe (ST) are 84 and 47, respectively. Kalaigaon Assembly Constituency is a part of MangaldoiLok Sabha Constituency, and there is no assembly seat for the reserved category.

DISTRICT

Kalaigaon is a town that comes under the Udalguri district of Assam, India. It is a district in Bodoland Territorial Region in Assam in Northeastern India. The headquarters of the district is Udalguri town. Udalguri is also known as Odalguri. People of many religion like Hindu, Muslim and Christian are living together in the district. It also has several tourist places like the old Hanuman temple in udalguri town, Bhairabkunda picnic spot, Manas National Park, and many more.

There is only one town under the Kalaigaon assembly constituency that is Kalaigaon town, and the total population of this town is 5112.

There is about 78 number of villages in Kalaigaon. The names of few villages are :Amgurigaon no 1, Amgurigaon no 2, Bagichachubagaon, BakrajharBagicha, Balipara, Bangaon, Bannaguri, Barangabari, Barjhar, Barkalabagicha, Barpukhurigaon and Barruahauligaon. 

ASSEMBLY STATUS

In the Assembly Election of 2016, Kalaigaon Constituency had a total number of 154170 voters, and out of this, the total number of valid votes was 132540. In the election, Maheswae Baro, a candidate of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BOPF) party, won the election with 47206 total votes by defeating Nathu Ram Boro, a candidate of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party who got 29585. He lost by 17621 votes. The Kalaigaon assembly constituency is expected to go polls in April – May 2021 as a part of the 2021 Assam assembly election.

TOTAL POPULATION

Kalaigaon is a town in the Udalguri district of Assam, India. As per the 2011 census report, Kalaigaon has a total population of 85616, and out of this population, 43562 are male, and 42054 are female. The total population living in urban areas is 5112, of which 2580 are males, and 2532 females are male, and the people living in rural areas is 80504, of which 40982 are male, and 39522 are females. The people living in rural areas are more than the people of the urban area.

Kalaigaon is a place with a total number of 17710 households. There are a total of 16623 households in the rural area and 1087 households in urban.

Kalaigaon Assembly Constituency has a tap water facility. And the people of Kalaigaon also use hand pump and uncovered wells for their daily consumption and use of water.

Currently, there is no municipality in the area. The villages have panchayat who oversees the administration of the village.

According to the census 2011, the population of Kalaigaon includes many religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain. The religion with the highest population is Hindu, with 68019 population from which 34578 are males, and 33441 are females. The religion with the second-highest population is Muslim, with 8684 population of which 4508 are male, and 4176 are female. The religion with the third highest population is Christian, with 3619 of which 1806 are male and 1813 are female. 

CAST AND TRIBES IN THE CONSTITUENCY

Schedule Cast (SC) living in Kalaigaon according to 2011 census is 11408 from which 5872 is male, and 5536 is female. And the total no. of Schedule Tribe (ST) is 24594, from which 12323 are male and 12271 females.

The only town under Kalaigaon Assembly Constituency is Kalaigaon town.

The total no. of voters turnout in Kalaigaon Constituency is 132540, of which 68603 is the number of its male voters and 63937 is the number of its female voters.

SEX RATIO

The sex ratio of the Kalaigaon circle is 964 per 1000 male. Which is higher than the sate sex ratio which is 904.

AGE GROUP DISTRIBUTION

In the Kalaigaon Assembly Constituency, 9289 are under six, of which 4713 are boys, and 4576 are girls. 

POLLING PERCENTAGE FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS

According to the graph given below, the winning party for the year 2014 has been the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the winning party of 2016 was the BOPF party. Again in the year, 2019 Bharatiya Janata Party was the winner.

RESULT OF THE LAST FIVE ELECTION

In the 1996 Assembly Election, Mahendra Mohan Rai Choudhury of the AGP party won the seat with 23248 total votes by defeating the Independent (IND) candidate BhupenBoro. He lost by 2428 votes.

In the 2001 election, Nathu Boro from the Independent (IND) party won the election with 27493 votes. MukulSaikia of the Indian National Congress (INC) party secured a second position with 24412 votes.

In the 2006 Assembly Election, the winner was MaheswarBaro of the Independent (IND) party, who got 27704 votes. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate Mukunda Ram Choudhury was the runner with 23559 total votes.

In the 2011 election, Mukunda Ram Choudhury of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) party won the seat with 42550, and a Bodoland Peoples Front party candidate MaheswarBaro secured second with 39742 votes.

And in the 2016 Assembly Election, a candidate of Bodoland Peoples Front named MaheswarBaro won the seat with 47206 and became MLA, and the runner up was Nathu Ram Baro of the AIUDF party, who secured 29589 votes. 

PERCENTAGE VOTE SHARE OF POLITICAL PARTY IN LAST ELECTION

Maheswar Baro, the winner of the 2016 Assembly Election of Bodoland Peoples Front party, got 35.54%. Nathu Ram Baro of All India United Democratic Front party (AIUDF) was the runner up with 22.28%. Mukunda Ram Choudhury of the AsomGanaParishad secured 18.29%. The Independent party's Babul Basumatary secured 8.54%, and Indrajit Kumar Saikia of the Indian National Congress party secured 7.81%.

WORK DONE IN LAST FIVE YEARS BY THE CANDIDATE

MaheswarBaro, MLA of Kalaigaon, has inaugurated Dhupguri High School boundary walls, Kalaigaon Gandhi Bakari and Vasudev temple. He also inaugurated the Bhangabarua temple and playground under Chief Minister Rural Development Scheme at Khairabari.

BIG TICKET SCHEMES/ PROJECTS ANNOUNCED IN THE RUN UP TO THE ELECTION FOR THE CONSTITUENCY

In the coming Assam Assembly Election 2021, different political parties have laid out their manifestos to the public to win the election. The Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi has mentioned that they will build an anti-CAA memorial once they win in the upcoming election. He also said that it would be a memorial to commemorate anti CAA protesters' martyrdom who sacrificed their lives to save Assamese pride.

The manifesto also mentioned the waiver of all types of microfinance loans for women to ease the women's problems in the villages that take loans from microfinance organization. The party also promised free electricity up to 120 units for the poor and middle-class people. They don't have to pay a massive amount of money for the consumption of basic electricity.

Bharatiya Janata Party announced that many vehicles with audio-visual presentations would tour Assam, and the people will express what they want. This party, who had already provided 2.5 lakhs with each to around 8000 Namgarhs, also promised to extend the benefits of other Namgarhs. This party also provided land pattas to the landless people.

The AIUDF party promised to protect the security of the minorities and deal with the issues of illegal immigrants.
