Karimganj North is a tehsil located in the Karimganj district of Assam. It is one of the five assembly constituencies included within the Karimganj district and one of the eight constituencies included under the Karimganj parliamentary constituency.
Karimganj North Vidhan Sabha Constituency is one among the 126 assembly constituencies of Assam. It is serialised as the 3rd constituency of the Assam Assembly. Karimganj North is a part of the Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency. The elected MLA of the 2016 election is Kamakhya Dey Purkayastha of the Indian National Congress party. He won the election with 45289 votes and a percentage of 34.63%.

Karimganj North comes under the Karimganj District, which is an administrative district of Assam. It is located in the southern part of Assam, bordering Tripura and Bangladesh. It is in the Barak Valley alongside Hailakandi and Cachar. Earlier it was a part of the Sylhet district now a part of Bangladesh.
Geographically Karimganj is spread actoss 1809 square kilometres. Barak is the primary river in the district, along with other small and big tributaries that run through the district.
Karimganj is recognised as one of the prime centres of trade and commerce across all North-East. The river port of Karimganj district holds a crucial position as it is capable of managing big cargos carried by different steamers going through the riverways. Being a bordering district of Assam, Karimganj plays a vital role in import-export businesses. Agriculture too is another main source of income, and tea and sugar cane harvesting has been considered as some of the key contributors to Karimganj's economy.
There is one sub-division in Karimganj and five tehsils, and seven community development blocks in the district. Karimganj, Badarpur and Badarpur railway towns are three prime towns in the Karimganj district. Additionally, it has 96 Gaon Panchayats and 7 Anchalik Panchayats as well.
Based on the 2011 population census of India, Karimganj has a population of 1228686 people with a 673 population density per square kilometre. Over the decade from 2001 to 2011, Karimganj has seen 20.74% of population growth. It has a literacy rate of around 79.72%, and the sex ratio is 961 women per 1000 male.
Bengali is the official language of the Karimganj district which is spoken by almost 86% of people, and English is recognised as the second official language of the district. Moreover, Bengali Muslims are the dominant people.
As already mentioned, as a bordering district, transportation is no longer an issue for Karimganj. It is equipped with both roadways and railways. Badarpur railway station is the largest junction in the district, and there are multiple bus stands that connect Karimganj to the rest of Assam and neighbouring states as well.
There are mainly three considerable towns in Karimganj North which are- Karimganj, Badarpur and Badarpur Railway Town.
ASSEMBLY STATUS
In the Assembly election of 2016, the INC's Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha won the challenge from the BJP leader Mission Ranjan Das. Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha got 45289 votes compared to BJP contestant Mission Ranjan Das's 44828 votes.
In the 2011 Assembly election, too, Indian National Congress' Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha had routed the Bharatiya Janata Party's Mission Ranjan Das. Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha got a considerable number of 45027 votes compared to Mission Ranjan Das, who netted just 27257 votes.
The voter turnout in North Karimganj in the previous Assembly election was 76.25 per cent.
As per the 2011 census of India, Karimganj North had a total population of 262468. Out of these, 72.87% of people live in rural areas, and 27.13% live in urban areas.

1.) In the 1996 Assam Assembly Elections, Sirajul Haque Chaudhary from Assam Gana Parishad party won the Karimganj North seat with 36866 number of votes. He defeated Mission Ranjan Das of BJP party.
2.) In the 2001 Assam Assembly Elections, Mission Ranjan Das from BJP party won the Karimganj North seat with 45429 number of votes. He defeated Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Chaudhary of UMFA party.
3.) In the 2006 Assam Assembly Elections, Mission Ranjan Das from BJP party won the Karimganj North seat with 32666 votes. He defeated Ketaki Prasad Dutta of INC party.
4.) In the 2011 Assam Assembly Elections, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha from INC party won the Karimganj North seat with 45027 votes. He defeated Mission Ranjan Das of BJP party.

In the last assembly election, the Indian National Congress Party candidate Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha won with a total 45289 votes with a 34.63% share. Mission Ranjan Das from the Bharatiya Janata Party lost the battle with 44821 votes. Sahabdul Islam Chaudhary came in the third position by securing 34207 votes.

Of the various steps taken by sitting MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, he also held meetings with the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over the safety issues of Bengalis and ensured that communal harmony among Bengali and Khasi communities is maintained. He has also kept his focus on the workers of the Cachar paper mill and provided them with some monetary funds.
