Patharkandi is a township located in Karimganj district in the Indian state of Assam. It is 350 kilometres south of the state capital Guwahati and 32 kilometres south of the district headquarters Karimganj. Patharkandi is situated by the bank of the Longai River. Patharkandi is also an important police station and a name of an Assam Legislative Assembly constituency.

Patharkandi (constituency number 2) is one of the 5 constituencies located in Karimganj district. Patharkandi is part of Karimganj (Lok Sabha constituency) along with 7 other assembly segments, namely, Badarpur, Karimganj North, Karimganj South, Ratabari in Karimganj district, Hailakandi, Katlichera and Algapur in Hailakandi district. Located in Assam's Karimganj district, the Patharkandi Assembly constituency falls under the Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency.

In Vidhansabha elections 2011, Monilal Gowala of INC party won with 44986 votes. The runner up was Kartik Sena Sinha of AIUDF party. The margin of victory was: 3224 votes

Patharkandi comes under the Karimganj District of the state Assam of India which is the administrative headquarters of the district. Karimganj is bounded on north by the district of Dima Hasao, on the west by Bangladesh and Tripura, on the east Hailakandi district and on the south by Tripura and Mizoram. Karimganj is situated between longitude 91°15' and 93°15' east latitude 24°8' and 25°8' north and covers an area of 1809 kms. out of the state total areas of 78438 kms. In term of geographical area, the rank of the district is 21 compared to other districts of Assam.

ASSEMBLY STATUS

Around 500 members of the Congress joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Patharkandi, Karimganj District. This has happened at a time when the Congress was preparing a strategy to strengthen its base against the BJP.

As the 2021 Assam Assembly Election is just a few months away, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started its poll strategy and warm up. A lot of members from other political parties are joining the BJP strengthening it further. The political scenario in Assam is changing every day and the state saw the birth of another regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) last week.

BJP which is ruling with absolute majority had decimated the 15-year Congress rule and came to power with Sarbananda Sonowal as its chief minister in 2016. In the 2016 Assembly election, the BJP's Krishnendu Paul won the Assembly seat, netting 46,419 votes compared to his closest rival Debendra Kumar Sinha of the AUIDF, who received 39,172 votes. In the 2011 Assembly election, Monilal Gowla of the Indian National Congress had won the seat, receiving 44,986 votes, narrowly edging out runner-up Kartik Sena Sinha of the AUIDF. Sinha had received 41,762 votes. The Patharkandi Assembly constituency is expected to go to polls in April or May 2021, as part of the 2021 Assam Assembly election. The Assam Assembly polls will be held to elect a total of 126 Members of the Assam Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

According to 2011 census, Total Patharkandi population is 189,835 people are living in this Block, of which 96,661 are male and 93,174 are female. BIG TICKET SCHEMES/PROJECTS ANNOUNCED IN THE RUN UP TO THE ELECTIONS FOR THE CONSTITUENCIES

Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched two road projects that are soon going to start in Patharkandi, Karimganj district. The minister along with several officials from the PWD department inspected the site. The newly launched road projects are Kanhai Bazar which is worth Rs 22 crore and the other Asimganj- Anipur road project costing around Rs 10 crore. In his visit to the site, Sarma also interacted with the local people. Also, laid foundation stone for construction of road from Chandkhira Kukitol NEC Road to Basantinagar via Koilaghat under BADP(SCA)- Rs 134.00 Lac.
