Barpeta is a township in the Barpeta district/region and a headquarter. The official languages of Barpeta are Bodo, Assamese, Bengali. Barpeta is a township in Barpeta region, Assam, India. Barpeta district is an authoritative district. Its headquarter is at Barpeta. The district has many important towns and villages namely, Barpeta, Howly, Barpeta Road, Bhabanipur, Sorbhog, Bahari, Sarupeta, Mandia etc, among them Barpeta Road is the largest town in the region. It is a commercial town. The district has 1,693,622 inhabitants which includes, 867,004 males and 826,618 females. The district's neighbouring country is Bhutan towards the north.

The Assembly Election of Barpeta Constituency had 181385 electors. Amongst them, the overall valid votes were 163152. In the 2016 Assembly Election, AGP candidate Gunindra Nath Das won the MLA seat, with 63563 votes and became MLA, whereas a candidate from INC A Rahim Ahmed was the runner-up with 57753 votes. Therefore he lost the MLA seat by 5810 votes.

  • In prior to the 1996 and 2001 Assembly Election of Assam, a candidate Ismail Hussain of AIIC(T) and INC had won twice the MLA seat with 23255 and 46226 votes, respectively.
  • In the Assembly Election of 2006, a candidate Gunindra Nath Das of AGP had won MLA seat against Ismail Hussain with 48052 votes.
  • In the 2011 Assembly Elections of Assam, a candidate Abdur Rahim Khan of AIUDF had won the MLA seat with 20511 votes.
  • In prior to 2016 Assembly Election, a candidate of 2006 MLA Election name, Gunindra Nath Das of AGP had again won the MLA seat against Abdur Rahim Khan with 63563 votes.
