Sentinel Digital Desk

Guwahati: Two coal traders on Wednesday surrendered before the Assam Police amid prolong pressure from the police department since February 21, 2019.

The two coal traders identified as Ashok Nath and Ramesh Rai were involved in assaulting a truck driver physically. Accordingly, a case was registered in connection to the matter at Basistha Police Station by Axomia Yuva Manch (Case No: 259/19).

As per earlier reports, one Tapan Bora (truck driver) was discovered chained and ruthlessly beaten up at a parking lot in Beharbari by the close aides of Nath and Rai. Following the incident, two people Saurav Sarkar and Laru Gopal Mahanta had been arrested in this connection earlier by Basistha Police under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Nandini Kakati.

Speaking to The Sentinel Digital, ACP Nandini Kakati said, “We carried our investigation since February 21, and figured out that both the coal traders were absconding after the incident. Our team had arrested several employees of the coal traders and interrogated them. We have also tried to verify the persons whom they have contacted over the phone after the incident. Accordingly, we have arrested and interrogated them. Moreover, we have also tried to make an attempt in the court so both Nath and Rai doesn’t get the anticipatory bail in connection to the matter.”

ACP Kakati also informed that both the coal traders had escaped to Bihar and had also switched off their mobile phones thereafter. However, they surrendered before the police today.

Meanwhile, the matter has been forwarded to the court.

It may be mentioned that the driver Tapan Bora was supposed to bring coal from Tinsukia in his truck bearing registration number (NL 02 Q 5857) from the coal traders Ramesh Rai and Ashok Nath. The truck was discovered by employees of Rai and Nath, bereft of the coal, due to which they chained Bora at the parking lot of Rai. Bora had also confessed that he sold off the coal for Rs 2 lakh at Bokakhat and shared the profit with the handyman. Owing to this, Saurav Sarkar lodged a counter case (Case No: 264/19) against driver Bora.

Further police investigations are on.
