Guwahati: Ahead of the publication of the final list of the government’s National Register of Citizens (NRC), Former State Power Minister and present Nagaon MP from Congress Pradyut Bordoloi on Friday assured to provide all legal support to all the genuine citizens whose names were excluded from the final list.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, Pradyut Bordoloi alleged the BJP Government is playing a communal politics in order to support a particular religion in the nation.

Also, there are reports stating that those excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) to be published on August 31 will get a window of 10 months to prove their citizenship before being sent to detention centres, as police officials in Assam on Thursday prepared to face an unprecedented “crisis”.

Meanwhile, Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said the police and other forces had ensured that security was in place ahead of Saturday. “I believe this entire process will be completed peacefully with awareness and sensitization drives preceding the exercise,” he said.

On the other hand, senior Supreme Court Advocate in a press statement earlier stated that with the final NRC publication nearing its date on 31st of August, the Chief Minister and the leaders of the ruling party have started blaming all and sundry, particularly the Chief Co-ordinator of NRC, Prateek Hajela for what is evidently going to be an NRC riddled with flaws, which will include a large number of foreigners.

Hazarika further alleged that the Government and the leaders of the ruling party are now trying to shift the blame which squarely rests upon them, since the beginning of the NRC process, the BJP has been in power in the Centre as well as the State and all along whenever discrepancies in the NRC process came to light, be it officers/personnel caught on video seeking bribe, foreigner being deployed in the NRC process, daily reports in the media of subversion of the NRC process etc. The Government and the leaders were only so happy to turn a blind. “Their singular obsession was to include Hindu Bangladeshis in the NRC by granting them citizenship. They weren’t even bothered with large scale inclusion of foreigners in the draft NRC. Last year, on 26th August 2018, we had published a 173-page representation to the Registrar General and the State Government pointing out discrepancies in the NRC which included a large number of foreigners, the Government and the leader kept quiet. In fact, the Chief Minister on the publication of the first NRC draft described it as historic being an important milestone for the protection of the indigenous people,” blamed Upamanyu Hazarika.
