Dhing Express Hima Das creates History, clinched her 5th Gold of the month

Sentinel Digital Desk

Guwahati: Dhing Express Hima Das creates history, clinched her fifth gold of the month in her 400-meter race in the Czech Republic on Saturday, recording 52.09 seconds on the clock.

This timing was reported to be the season-best performance for Hima in a 400-metre event.

Her season-best timing was 52.88 seconds before Saturday’s event. Also, her personal best is 50.79 seconds, recorded at the Asian Games last year.

It is to be noted that this is a roaring comeback by the Ace Sprinter from Dhing in Assam after she had failed to complete the 400-meter race in the Asian Athletics Championship in April this year because of a back spasm. This was the first time she was competing in the 400-meter discipline since then.

The 400-meter event has been picked by Hima’s coaching staff as the event she will specialize on with the 2020 Olympics in mind.

The other sprinters at Saturday’s race were no match for Hima, with only second-placed VK Vismaya finishing with timing less than 53 seconds.

About Hima Das

Hima Das (born 9 January 2000), nicknamed the Dhing Express, is an Indian sprint runner from the state of Assam. She holds the current Indian national record in 400 metres with a timing of 50.79 s that she clocked at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships.

Hima Das was born at Kandhulimari village, near the town of Dhing in the state of Assam to Ronjit and Jonali Das. Her parents are farmers by profession. She is the youngest of five children.[5] She attended the Dhing Public high School and was initially interested in playing football. She played football with the boys at her school and had always wanted to pursue a career in football. However, she did not see any prospects for herself in women's football in India. Later, upon advice from a school physical education teacher, Shamsul Hoque, she changed to sprint running.
