Guwahati: The State Finance Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the government of Assam would take the Supreme Court route to seek revision of the current National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state if nation-wide NRC is not implemented.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati in Janata Bhawan, Sarma said, “If there is No National NRC then for Assam we need to have a fresh NRC or revision of NRC, but, for that, we need to wait for the Supreme Court’s Verdict because issue of Assam NRC is always distinct and different from National NRC.”
He also mentioned that a petition by the Government of Assam and several other pleas seeking re-verification of citizens are already pending in the Supreme Court.
The Assam Minister added that the detention centres in the state are due to a Gauhati HC order, and not because of any decision taken by the Centre.
