Silchar: It was after a long time that the Forest Department of Cachar was seen on action in the midst of reports of forest wealth of all sorts being stealthily taken away by mafias and their goons despite the official claims of strict vigilance and surveillance. After being alerted by a reliable source, DFO Sunnydeo Choudhury assisted by Ashok Deb in charge protection squad, Sahadat Ali, range officer, Samsuddin Laskar, range officer, Maniarkhal range, Sonai, conducted raid at a godown in the area on Tuesday. From this godown, 2000 cubic ft of sagun logs were recovered.
The value of the sagun logs in the market has been estimated to be around Rs 30 lakh. The location of godown and its owner have not been shared. The logs were seized and the accused booked under specific provisions of Forest rules and regulations. An illegally installed saw machine was also seized and dismantled. It has been described as a biggest operation by the forest department. A few days back, report of illegally cut bamboos from Dholai forest range being taken away through a rivulet came out. But, there was no information about its seizure by the forest department.
