Hailakandi: In view of looming water scarcity, the Hailakandi district administration has asked all the heads of institutions to build rainwater/ground water harvesting to conserve water.
In a letter to all the head of institutions, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli has urged them to construct rainwater/ground water harvesting structures in their buildings, offices and premises and to submit compliance report latest by October 31.
Jalli said the decision has been necessitated as many parts of the world are experiencing water-related problems at an alarming rate. “We have been carrying an ignorant attitude towards conservation of water in spite of so many scientific advancements in recent times. Climate change is continuously warning us about the risk of drought in our district in the near future. If we do not develop ethos of water conservation, we may also suffer Chennai-like drought situation,” she asserted.
The Deputy Commissioner urged every citizen to lend support to the Prime Minister’s clarion call for conservation of water through Jal Shakti Abhiyan and to transform it into a Jan Andolan.
In fact, India’s over-exploitation of groundwater is leading to “the worst water crisis in its history” warns the Government’s own think tank NITI Aayog. Groundwater is at the heart of this crisis. The Government warned that by 2030, 40% of Indians will be without access to fresh drinking water.
