HAILAKANDI: No case of African Swine Fever has been reported in South Assam's Hailakandi district so far, said District Veterinary Officer, RA Laskar. Laskar said though there is no case of the African Swine Fever reported from any part of the district, the authorities here are not taking any chances and has taken a slew of measures to prevent the outbreak of the dreaded disease.
A meeting of the District Level Task Force headed by District Development Commissioner, Vikram Dev Sarma took stock of the situation here on Thursday in view of the death of over 2,900 pigs in different parts of Assam.
It decided to go in for disinfectant of the pigsties to keep the dreaded disease at bay. The meeting decided to urge the owners of the piggery farms to keep the pigsties clean and hygienic. Owners of the piggeries have been asked to immediately inform authorities if any case of African Swine Fever is detected. The meeting also decided to create awareness among the owners of piggery farms by maintaining social distancing norms in view of COVID-19 situation.
District Veterinary Officer, Laskar informed that 575 vaccination of pigs have been carried out in different parts of the district, including remote areas during the past several days. He revealed that the department has placed a requirement of 2,500 vaccines against which 700 vaccines have been provided. He informed that a mapping exercise is on to identify new areas where there are concentration of pigs so that 'no pigs are left out of the vaccination drive'.
Laskar further informed that as there is no case of African Swine Fever in the district so far, the administration did not ban the selling of pork or restrict intra-district transportation of the animal. "We are on alert and necessary measures will be taken if the need arises," he added.
