Guwahati: The All Assam Brick Field Owners' Association (AABFOA) said that brick prices would go up if the government increased the GST on the brick industry up to 12 per cent.

AABFOA president Karuna Kalita said, "The price of bricks will go for a steep hike if the State Government imposes GST on the commodity up to 12 per cent. Already the price of coal used in brick kilns has gone up. Besides the hike in the daily wages of labourers, other expenditures have also gone up. The brick industry has been under various problems regarding raw materials, transportation, labourer, various taxes etc."

Kalita said, "The owners of over 1,000 brick kilns in the state are educated unemployed. Every brick factory provides job opportunities to 250-300 people directly or indirectly. They are playing an important role in the state economy. Solving the problems afflicting this industry will be in the interest of the state economy."

Till February 2022, the price of 2,000 bricks was Rs 16,500, which rose to Rs 20,000 by March. Now the price of 2,000 bricks is Rs 24,000.
