DIBRUGARH: In order to exhume the body of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed, a team from the West Bengal Police has traveled to Dibrugarh, Assam.
A second post-mortem was to be performed at the Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta, therefore the Calcutta High Court ordered that Faizan be exhumed from a cemetery in the town of Dibrugarh.
A four-person police squad from Bengal's Kharagpur has reportedly arrived in Dibrugarh to carry out the judgement of the Calcutta High Court, according to sources.
Faizan was an IIT Kharagpur third-year mechanical engineering student. On October 14, he was discovered in a dorm room at IIT Kharagpur in a half-melted state.Faizan, an Assamese from Tinsukia, was laid to rest at the Amolapatty Kabarstan (burial site) in the city of Dibrugarh.
The father of the 23-year-old student objected to IIT-Kharagpur representatives being in the Dibrugarh cemetery in Assam."We were told some professors from IIT came here. Why did they come? What is their objective we don't know. We are doubtful about their presence," he told to the media.
On October 14 of last year, Faizan Ahmed's body was discovered in a dorm room on the campus. Although the family claimed that he had been murdered, the college administration had claimed that it was a case of suicide.
His relatives told the court that ragging drove him over the edge and that the management of IIT-Kharagpur ignored his complaints."It was a clear case of murder," they said.
During the hearing, the Calcutta High Court had levelled harsh criticism at the prestigious institution, stating that the occurrence was an example of ragging.
A second post-mortem is "vital and necessary for discovering the truth," the top court stated when it issued the order for the exhumation of the body.
"The body of the victim has been buried as per Muslim rites at Assam. The body of the victim Faizan Ahmed is ordered to be exhumed," Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had said.
"The investigating officer in the matter shall coordinate with the Assam Police and ensure that the body and/or remains are exhumed, brought to Kolkata by the State Police and fresh post mortem is conducted," he added.
