GUWAHATI: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said that the Government was contemplating shortening the summer vacation to 25 days from the existing 30 days next year in the interest of education.

Addressing the media on Friday, the Education Minister said, "The Asom Jatiya Vidyalaya gives 25-day summer vacation. We are also contemplating reducing the summer vacation to 25 days."

On objections from teachers to taking special classes during the summer vacation, the minister said, "The focus should be on education, not on vacation and holidaying for sightseeing. If we focus on holidaying instead of education, the quality of education will suffer a setback. The teacher-taught relations should be continuous. Special classes and tuitions do take place in schools during the summer vacation. The teachers have to make special arrangements for students taking the matriculation examination. We will look into teachers' vacation and earned leave methodically."

Pegu said, "Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU) informed us that it had rescheduled the ACEE (Assam Common Entrance Examination) for admission into the premier government engineering colleges to July 31, instead of July 3, because of floods."
