GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday held a meeting with Cabinet colleagues Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Malla Baruah and took stock of preparations in connection with the mega celebrations planned on 23rd and 24th November here to mark the 400th Birth Anniversary of Lachit Barphukan.
The two-day celebration, which also includes a cultural event, will be held at Vigyan Bhawan and Sunder Nursery.
He said Lachit Barphukan never got the due position in the annals of history as other valiant warriors like Chatrapati Shivaji got, though late, the process has just begun following the organizing of this event.
The former President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the year-long celebration in February this year in Guwahati to mark the 400th birth anniversary of Barphukan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to the concluding function at Vigyan Bhawan on November 24, Sarma said.
The Chief Minister also said since most of the ministers of the Government of Assam will be camping here in Delhi to oversee the preparations, hence if the need arises, the cabinet would sit here to decide important issues.
Yesterday, Hazarika, Baruah and Ashok Singhal, also a cabinet minister in the Sarma-led government, visited the venues and oversaw the preparations for the upcoming event. They were accompanied by MLAs, Sushanta Borgohain, Diganta Kalita, Manab Deka, Rekibuddin Ahmed and a few senior government officials.
Later, the Ministers, MLAs and officials attended a special meeting at Assam House and held detailed discussions regarding the preparations. Matters related to Transport and Accommodation sub-committees, two of the various such committees formed to smoothly take forward the preparations, figured in the meeting.
Minister Hazarika, whose I&PR is the nodal department for organizing the mega event in the national capital, said, "The Government of Assam, led by Hon'ble Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is determined to highlight the valour and unwavering patriotism of Lachit Barphukan, a valiant son of Ai (mother) Assam, on a national and international scale", a press release said.
