Guwahati: Continuing its fight against the COVID-19, the Assam Government has set up a 450-bed hospital at Guwahati's Maniram Dewan Trade Centre that will cater exclusively to patients afflicted by the viral disease.
Yesterday, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected the hospital along with Minister of State Pijush Hazarika. "Stepping up our infra for treatment, we have set up a 450-bed COVID-19 care hospital at Maniram Dewan Trade Centre, Guwahati. This shall be functional soon. Inspected the site today along with Minister of State Pijush Hazarika and health Department officials", Sarma wrote in a tweet.
This hospital is a timely development, for it has come at a time when the city's situation is said to be in a "critical" state by Sarma, who has been assessing the situation, himself. At the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has urged the State's health administration to conduct 10,000 tests in the city.
It needs mention here that another 800-bed COVID-19 hospital has been set up by the state's health department to shoulder the load of the increasing number of patients in the state. Additionally, a 300-bedded hospital has been launched at the Patanjali Yogpeeth in Mirza in Kamrup (R). The state has so far reported 8,955 cases of the virus, out of which 3,109 cases are active. As many as 12 people in the state have died due to virus-related complications.
Meanwhile, India's coronavirus tally has crossed the six lakh-mark after more than 19,000 new infections and 434 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. More than 3.5 lakh patients have recovered from the viral disease so far.
