GUWAHATI: A total of 560 bags of suspected Burmese supari were seized from Guwahati Railway Station by Government Railway Police (GRP) on Saturday night.

These supari bags were seized from three coaches of the 03174 (Agartala- Sealdah) Kanchanjungha Express by GRP at Guwahati Railway station. Information was received regarding transportation of some contraband articles. Accordingly, GRP conducted checking in the railway station. When the Kanchanjungha Express arrived at the railway station, search was conducted and the supari bags were recovered. The GRP seized the recovered supari bags. The approximate market value of the seized Burmese supari is around Rs 1 crore. It is suspected that the supari bags had been brought from Dimapur.

Burmese supari is smuggled from Myanmar and then unlawfully transported to different parts of India and abroad. Smugglers usually use the Railways as a safe route to transport Burmese supari illegally. Last month, Government Railway Police had seized 40 bags of suspected Burmese supari and 20 gunny bags of suspected Burmese elachi from the 5933 Tinsukia-Amritsar Down Express at Guwahati Railway Station. Jorabat Police had also intercepted a truck carrying 66 bags of Burmese supari last month. The truck was on its way from Silchar to Howly, Barpeta.
