GUWAHATI: Kamrup Metro administration carried out enforcement drives against public vehicles for collecting excess fares from the passengers on November 18.

Notably, the enforcement team filed 33 cases and seized six vehicles.

It is being noted that the city buses, tempos, and magic passenger vehicles collect hefty fares from the people without the knowledge of the authorities.

Kamrup Metro District Administration tweeted in the afternoon about this drive mentioning the cases that have been registered.

To limit the spread of COVID-19, the state government previously has published Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for public vehicles, stating that they must carry 50% of passengers. Taking advantage of this, city buses and other public transportation vehicles charge customers exorbitant prices. Even after transporting 100% passengers, city buses, tempos, and trackers charge excessive fares without any warning from the government, which the public has complained about as there are lot many people in the city who prefer public transport to travel.

People are appreciating the move by the administration suggesting some measures like putting charts of the fares in every vehicle and requesting the government to continue this type of checking on a regular basis and eventually punish those who violate the norms.

Recently another norm came in highlighting that the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) asks all the city bus staff including conductors, and handymen in Guwahati to wear compulsory uniforms after receiving complaints from citizens and authorities about the unauthorized drivers and conductors working for the proper identification. In the greed of earning some more money drivers often lease the bus to another driver for the day which may lead to accidents so to ensure their identity, the norm must implement in the city.
