GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Regional Office, Pollution Control Board, Assam, and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) jointly carried out an enforcement drive at Fancy Bazar in the city against illegal storage, sale and use of banned single-use plastic on Tuesday.

During this drive, 658 kg of banned single-use plastic items were seized from various vendors and 11 vendors were imposed fine at the rate of Rs 500 each. This drive will be carried out in a series upto August, 2023 for the enforcement of the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 for phasing out the single-use plastic items that have been prohibited – polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for baloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, knives, straw trays and stirrers, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron and plastic carry bags below 120 micron.

The Assam Government banned the production, distribution, stocking, sale and use of single-use plastic items from July 1, 2022. This was done to protect the environment from pollution.
