It is sad to inform that PK Gogoi, IAS (retired) passed away peacefully at his Basisthapur, Guwahati residence at 8:45 am on July 13, leaving behind his wife Indu, two married daughters, Meenakshi, Pomy, son Bhaskarjyoti and a large circle of relatives and friends. He was 87 years old.

Brought up and cast in the old traditions of Assam administration; adept in revenue matters and tribal customary laws and usages he was cherry-picked by Captain Williamson Sangma to take up the onerous task of revamping Garo Hills District Council. He did exactly that. It was to his credit in three years (1973-75), through untiring efforts, Council's meaningful place was restored to a vibrant institution in the true spirit of 6th Schedule and it almost ran parallel to DC's office in terms of renewed importance and public outlook.

After a rewarding tenure in Tura, he moved to Shillong and took up various responsibilities in many departments. Once as Commissioner of Excise, Transport his office in heritage Morrelo building (presently HC on this site) used to be known and referred to as Gogoi office.

Gogoi had an immense reputation as an affable, generous and good-natured person. To me, it is a personal loss of a true friend of long five decades. At this dark moment my heartfelt thoughts for his wife Indu with a prayer that God may favour her and her grieving family with enough courage to bear the loss. May God accept and give the departed soul a place to rest in eternal peace.
