A Tribute to Retired Professor Dr. Balen Baishya

Dr Balen Baishya, retired professor, Government Ayurvedic College and a resident of Shantidan Path, Lankeswar, West Jalukbari passed away on May 26, night in a private hospital, Guwahati due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Balen Baishya, retired professor, Government Ayurvedic College and a resident of Shantidan Path, Lankeswar, West Jalukbari passed away on May 26, night in a private hospital, Guwahati due to COVID-19 pandemic. He was born on March 1952 in Agchia village under Palasbari circle of Kamrup district to Late Lakshmi Ram Baishya and Shabya Baishya. He did his schooling at Palasbari and passed the matriculation examination from Palasbari Anchalic High School in 1969. After completion of PU (Sc.), he admitted to Government Ayurvedic College, Jalukbari and completed the DAMS course in the year 1973. He also completed a B.Sc degree before joining the service at Government Ayurvedic College, Jalukbari in 1977 as Demonstrator in the Department of Sharir Kriya and promoted to lecturer in 1981. In the year 1986, he joined the P.G. course in Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar and completed M.D. (Ay) course in 1988 on deputation and joined as Assistant Professor in the department of Prasuti Tantra and Striroga at Government Ayurvedic College. During his professor tenure, he served as in-charge Principal for a period of two years in 1996-1998. He dedicated his life as a successful teacher and a good clinician, all his students showered him with respect. He retired as Professor and head of that department on 29th February 2012 and rendered services as Principal for a shorter period in two private Ayurvedic colleges of UP and West Bengal. But till his death, he was continuing services as a professor in the same department since 2014 Under NHM due to lack of faculties as per norms of the central council.

He was also closely associated with his native village Aghia Bihu Sanmilani, Suwari festival, Agchia Puthibharal etc. He put himself as an active worker in his locality as a new residential area to develop road conditions also he established Santidan Durga puja and Goshaighar as Secretary. He led the Government Ayurvedic College Teachers' Association for a long term by his skilful hands and contributed a lot to fulfil the demand and grievances of the teaching community. He was loved by all in the society because of his behaviour and soft-spoken nature He left behind his wife Nilima Dutta, a retired headmistress, two daughters and a host of relatives, friends and his students. Today, on the day of his adyasharaddha, we all the members of the Ayurvedic College fraternity and family pray to God for his eternal peace.
