GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students Union staged protests across the state against the state government’s recent decision to introduce English as the medium of instruction for science and mathematics starting from class 6. The organisation had announced that it would undertake a month-long protest against the state government if the decision was not rolled back, and as part of the same campaign, the organisation staged protests at the headquarters of all the districts. The in-charge president, Utpal Sharma, and the general secretary, Shankar Jyoti Baruah, demanded that action be taken towards the protection of the different linguist groups in the state. They mentioned that the decision to publish textbooks in English is totally against the betterment of local people, adding that it goes against the National Educational Policy 2020. Although the University Grants Commission has requested the vice chancellors of the affiliated universities to impart education in regional languages, the exact opposite is being done in the state of Assam, they said.
