GUWAHATI: Actor Ravi Sarma has resigned as a primary member of the BJP in protest against the introduction of the CAB (Citizenship Amendment Bill) in the Lok Sabha.
Addressing a press conference at Swahid Nyas here on Monday, the actor said, “What I’m today is by virtue of the people of the State. I’m an Assamese first. My identity as an actor comes later. As an Assamese I can do anything which I think right. We want to reciprocate the love which we as artistes get from the people of the State. I joined the BJP so that I can be generous to the people to ward off their grievances. I was with the AASU (All Assam Students’ Union) during its protest against the CAB earlier. I’m with the people of the State on the CAB. The interest of the nation comes first before anything else.”
Thanking the actor for taking such a step, AASU adviser-in-chief Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The indigenous people of the State are in distress. We need to go together when there’s distress.”
ASSU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, “Artistes can’t tolerate anything that harms the society. Glaring examples this are many artistes deserting their respective parties and taking the streets to protest against the CAB.”
