Advocates concerned of corona in Guwahati Central jail

Concerned with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Gauhati Central Jail, four advocates have submitted a letter

GUWAHATI: Concerned with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the Gauhati Central Jail, four advocates have submitted a letter to the CJM (Chief Judicial Magistrate) Kamrup (Metro) on Tuesday demanding its intervention to neutralize the alarming situation.

The advocates stated that the Gauhati Central Jail is turning up to be a big hotspot of COVID-19. In the letter, they mentioned about their visit to the Jail on Monday. They alleged that during their visit they saw several policemen in vehicles entering the jail premises even without getting their thermal check done. The letter further read, "After sometime, a bus with about 60 to 70 inmates came out from the jail. The inmates probably were being transferred to medical facilities as many of them have been infected with the deadly virus. The inmates, while passing by said that almost 95 per cent of the total inmates currently in the jail are infected. One of the prisoners also threw a letter to the outsiders of the jail premises where he stated about actual situation of the jail premises and asked to save the life of the prisoners."

The advocates who wrote the letter are – Kishor Kumar Kalita, Krishna Gogoi, Manoj Kr. Deuri and Surajit Bairagi.
