GUWAHATI: The AIUDF has said that it has extended moral support to the stand taken in Assam against the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act). It has also said that the party has already moved the Supreme Court of India against the Act.

In a statement issued to the press on Saturday, AIUDF working president Sirajuddin Ajmal said, “There has been agitation against the CAA, NRC (National Register of Citizens) and the NPR (National Population Register) all over the nation. However, the NPR is not going to be a reality in Assam. The people of Assam have a bitter experience on the NRC. Because of floods, erosion and other disasters a large number of people of the State could not preserve their documents, and that led them not being able to make it to the final NRC. Since the CAA directly violates the Assam Accord, it has to be opposed by all. Taking December 31, 2014 as the cut-off date instead of March 25, 1971 will have an adverse impact on the language, literature and culture of Assam, and that’s why the people of the State have been opposing in vehemently.”

He said that he raised the issue of the anti-CAA agitation and the killing of five in it in Assam at the January 13 meeting of opposition leaders in New Delhi. He said that the AIUDF will continue to side with the people of the State and carry forward the anti-CAA agitation.
