GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has passed a set of new regulations by amending the Assam Excise Rules of 2016 on June 30 with effect from July 1, 2023. With the new amendment, the prices of a variety of liquors will increase in different proportions depending on their production cost, type, and alcohol content. The order also allowed permission from Premium Off-Shops, which will be able to remain open until 11 p.m., one hour more than the 10 p.m. limit. These can be opened inside other commercial spaces or shopping malls. These businesses will be allowed to sell Indian-made foreign liquor, BIO, BII, Heritage Alcoholic Beverages, Beer, wine, and TRD.
The order also allows for lower-volume packages to be sold in the off-shops. As of now, the 180-ml package is the smallest size allowed for several major brands. With this new pricing, the state is expected to generate a huge amount of revenue from the sale of alcohol. Meanwhile, the wine shops in several parts of the state had to remain closed for a few hours on Saturday as the new prices had not been published after recalculating the price.
