Guwahati: State's Finance, Health, and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press meet held on Monday at Janata Bhawan announced that all academic restrictions due to COVID-19 protocols will be removed from January 1, 2021, in Assam.

This means the resumption of schools and colleges in a similar way as during pre-COVID days.

Addressing the media, Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the regular classes will begin next year. However, all the academic restrictions will be removed but wearing masks and maintaining social distancing will be there.

"We have decided to resume normal classes as the positive cases of COVID-19 has lessened in the state. The total number of COVID-19 cases in Kamrup metro in the last 10 days is only 20-25, that too most of the patients among them are passengers who flew by flight. There are no such cases of school students is registered. There is hardly over 100-150 Covid 19 cases are there across the state. We have observed things two months after that only we decide to withdrawal all academic restrictions, "the Minister added.

A proper Standard operating procedure (SOP) regarding regular classes from January next year will be published by the Assam education department on the matter later.

Along with removing academic restrictions, several other important decisions were taken during the cabinet meeting held at Guwahati on Sunday ( December 13) which was chaired by Assam CM SarbanandaSonowal. And the closing of all Assam government-run madrassas & Sanskrit schools (tols) is also one of them.

A bill in this regard will be tabled during the winter session of the State Assembly.
