GUWAHATI: The All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani (AAKRS) has called a torchlight procession on February 14 in protest against the Centre not introducing the amendment Bill for granting ST status to six ethnic groups of Assam on the last day of the Rajya Session that was adjourned sine die on Wednesday. The Sanmilani is irked at the Centre not paying heed to its demand.

Addressing the media here on Wednesday, AAKRS president Bireswar Saikia declared that after February 20, the Sanmilani will stage protests in front of DC and SDO offices in every district and subdivision. “We will resort to economic block, dharna and every other form of protest if our demand is not met,” a member of the AAKRS said. They have also decided at their executive meeting on February 13 that they will boycott the BJP. It is worth mentioning that the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha but never put into action. With the session of the Elders’ House adjourned sine die, the fate of the Bill is uncertain now.
