GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students Union) on Thursday sharply criticized the 'lathi charge' resorted to by the police on the people protesting against the move of the government to carry on a particular area in Chandrapur as a dumping ground.

Mentionably, the move is to shift the dumping ground from Bora gaon near the National Highway – also in the city. The Chandrapur public has been carrying on their protests continuously since June 28.

On Wednesday, the public — under the banner of the Chandrapur wing of the AASU — stopped the waste-carrying vehicles from various parts of Guwahati and the suburbs at a point on the Homen Borgohain Road. Subsequently, the police resorted to lathi-charge on the protestors, where two persons of the public got injured.

In a statement, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath and the youth organisation's general secretary Sankar Jyoti Baruah, "We condemn the barbaric action of the police on people carrying out their protests democratically. We demand a probe into the incident."

Meanwhile on Thursday, the local people resorted to satyagraha against the police action and also the shifting of the dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur.
