GUWAHATI: The All Kamrup (Metro) District Students' Union staged a satyagraha in front of the Swahid Nyas at Uzanbazar here on Friday as part of the All Assam Students' Union's (AASU's) Statewide agitation against the increase in prices of fuel and other essential commodities. Chief advisor of AASU Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya, its president Dipanka Kumar Nath and other office-bearers participated in the satyagraha programme in the city.

The protestors were planning to take out a rally from the protest site, but the police did not permit them to do so.

Bhattacharjya told the media that the State Government lacks the courage to face a democratic agitation. He informed that regional units of the AASU will carry out protests in their areas on April 6.

In a statement, Dipanka Kumar Nath and AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah that the Government's policy of increasing prices of various commodities is devastating the common people, who are facing steep prices of food items on one hand and fuel and cooking gas on the other hand.

They said that the Central and State Governments must roll back this anti-people decision of hiking prices, otherwise they will continue their agitation.
