GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has lambasted the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) for the latter's recent policy on studying Assamese.
The SEBA recently issued a notification stating that students would have the option of studying Assamese as an optional subject instead of the main subject. The State board has also made it a rule that students would have the option of studying Assamese neither as main nor optional subject.
Reacting sharply to the SEBA's decision a joint statement issued on Friday by the AASU president and general secretary Dipanko Kumar Nath and Sankar Jyoti Baruah respectively alleged that such policy is the result of a conspiracy hatched by a strong anti-Assam lobby to destroy the Assamese language. The AASU leaders have accused the SEBA to work at the dictates of such anti-Assamese lobby.
The AASU has demanded the SEBA to immediately withdraw its decision. The students' organization has threatened to launch a State-wide stir if the SEBA does not withdraw its policy on studying Assamese language.
