GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has opposed the government’s decision to reserve 7 per cent of seats in the medical colleges (MBBS and BDS courses) of the state for NRIs and NRI-sponsored quotas and is demanding its immediate scrapping. They wrote to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, mentioning that this is unjust towards the meritorious students of the state. AASU’s in-charge president, Utpal Sarma, said in a statement that “the increase in the number of medical colleges and setting up medical universities is a positive step taken by the government. So, it is necessary to assist doctors along with medical facilities. Recently, the decision by the Assam Government about reserving 7 per cent of seats for NRIs or NRI-sponsored candidates is illogical.” General Secretary Shankor Jyoti Baruah called this decision extremely unjust towards the talented students of the state, as the rich NRI students will now be able to get into the seats of hardworking Assamese students.
