GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a 10-hour hunger strike on Tuesday in all district headquarters of the State against the sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities and the State Government’s ‘failure’ to check price rise and inflation.

In Guwahati too, AASU activists staged the hunger strike from 6 am to 4 pm while shouting slogans against the government. AASU in-charge president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, “Prices of commodities that are required for daily use, vegetables and LPG cylinders have gone through the roof. To make matters worse for common people, prices of medicines have also increased and electricity tariff has also been hiked. Unfortunately, the State Government has proved a complete failure in putting a check on price rise. No steps have been taken to provide some respite to people from the sky-rocketing prices of essential items.”

Launching a scathing attack on the leaders of the ruling party, they further said, “When some of these leaders were in the Opposition, they took out unique protests against price hike. But now when people are reeling under price rise, these leaders are maintaining a stoic silence.”

The students’ body demanded that the government must take strong and immediate measures against the unabated price rise, else the AASU will continue its agitation.
