GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a massive protest against price hike across the State on Tuesday. The Kamrup (metro) District Students’ Union also staged the protest in Guwahati.
AASU activists took out a protest rally from Swahid Nyas in Uzan Bazar. Holding placards and banners and dummy LPG cylinders, the activists raised various slogans against the government’s failure to control the spriralling prices of essential commodities. The activists were, however, stopped from moving forward by the police.
Kamrup (metro) District Students’ Union president Razmil Ali and general secretary Tutumoni Kalita said, “The steep hike in the prices of essential commodities has dampened the festive atmosphere of Rongali Bihu. From hike in fuel prices, price of LPG cylinder, electricity tariff hike, hike in property taxes and toll gate taxes, the lives of the common people have become miserable.”
They further said, “The government has proved to be failure so far as controlling the steep hike in prices of essential commodities is concerned. This has compelled the people to come out on the streets to protest. Unless the government controls price hike, the AASU will stage a series of protests in the days to come.”
