All Assam Students' Union stages statewide protest against price rise

The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) staged a statewide protest against the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG that led to the hike in prices of other essential commodities.

GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) staged a statewide protest against the rise in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG that led to the hike in prices of other essential commodities.

The students' organization said that the Central and State governments failed to check the rise in prices. The central leadership of the AASU even warned the government that it would start a series of agitation if the government could not arrest the price hike. It said the rise in prices of petrol, diesel, LPG etc., led to the increase in the prices of other essential commodities. Even medicines are costlier now, the AASU leadership said. And the rise in the prices of flats will follow shortly, the AASU leaders said.

Talking to The Sentinel, AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath said, "The responsibility of keeping the prices of some commodities under control lies with the Centre and the State government. Both the governments failed to check the rise in prices now.

"Covid-19 has already ravaged the people of the state financially. To cap it all, the Central and State governments have failed to check the rise in prices."

In a statement, AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah said, "When in the Opposition, some of the present BJP legislators wore garlands of potato and onion and drove bullock carts to register their protest against price rise. However, after coming to power, they are silent when the prices of all commodities have skyrocketed."

The All Guwahati Students' Union (AGSU) also staged a protest in Guwahati against the rise in prices.
