GUWAHATI: The AASU (All Assam Students' Union) on Monday staged demonstrations in different parts of the State against the 'attack' on its members by the police in Sualkuchi and Tezpur.

Condemning the 'atrocities' of the police, the outraged AASU members burnt effigies of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal across the State.

AASU president Dipanko Kumar Nath stated that members of the Sualkuchi Students' Union were 'attacked' by the police on January 31 while they were peacefully demonstrating demanding withdrawal of the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), cancellation of draft EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment), and implementation of high-level committee's report on Clause VI of Assam Accord.

"Police assaulted the peaceful protesters at Sualkuchi and Tezpur. Several female protestors received injuries after they were beaten by male personnel. On Sunday's protest at Sualkuchi, three protestors were injured and were admitted to the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital)," added AASU general secretary Sankor Jyoti Baruah.

Demanding an end to the 'atrocities' of the police, the body underlined that they will continue to stage demonstrations.
