GUWAHATI: The All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) and the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA) have urged the Meiteis and Kukis of Manipur to exercise restraint for the sake of restoring peace in the state.

In a press statement, Aditya Khakhlari, AATS secretary general and chief convenor of CCTOA, said that there was complete breakdown of law and order in Manipur and for peace to prevail, both the Meiteis and Kukis must put aside their differences and take a step towards restoring peace in the region. “Violence is no solution to any issue. The situation in Manipur is volatile and unless the Meiteis and Kukis change their approach, the violence will continue and political parties will take advantage of this situation. Traders will also take this opportunity to increase the price of commodities, students will suffer as their studies are getting hampered, and the state’s progress will be stalled,” he said.

Khakhlari further said, “Deploying security forces alone cannot bring peace. The Centre and the Manipur government must create an atmosphere conducive for building peace. Social organizations must start discussions with the Meitei and Kuki communities to understand what each community wants so that steps can be taken to resolve the differences between the two communities. All individuals, intellectuals, political parties and organizations must work towards establishing peace in Manipur.”
