GUWAHATI: Alleged malpractices at the Emergency Operation Theatre (OT) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), especially in the Neurosurgery Department, have been unearthed
The malpractices, which have allegedly been going on for months, came to light after a patient’s attendant filed a complaint. According to the complaint, GMCH employees ask attendants to provide medicines and surgical equipment at the time of surgery but these medicines and surgical items are later sold outside.
GMCH Superintendent Dr Abhijit Sarma said, “The incident about the malpractice at the Emergency OT, GMCH has come to our notice after a complaint was filed by a patient’s attendant. On February 10, Professor and Head of the Neurosurgery department conducted an inquiry. However, nothing concrete emerged from that inquiry. Another inquiry was conducted and on the basis of the report of this inquiry conducted by Deputy Superintendent Dr DR Das, Rubul Kalita, a contractual employee of the Cardiothoracic and Neuroscience Centre, was relieved from his duties and released from service.”
Dr Sarma said that on the basis of another inquiry committee’s report, a case (55/2023 u/s 420/206 IPC) has been registered in Bhangagarh Police Station against the alleged malpractices. “Action will be taken against those involved as per law,” he said. He added that another inquiry has been instituted against four OT staff.
